Stephanie Gilmore Wins 6th World Title
The final day of the Target Maui Pro at Hawaii’s beautiful Honolua Bay ended in celebration for Carissa Moore and our homegrown Gold Coast girl, Stephanie Gilmore. Moore overcame Tyler Wright in an epic final showdown to take out the event on home soil, while the most intense World Title race of Gilmore’s career ended in flying colours.
The 2014 Title was up for grabs for Roxy’s Stephanie Gilmore and fellow Aussies Sally Fitzgibbons and Tyler Wright. After Sally’s early departure and Gilmore going down in the Quarterfinals soon after, it came down to the most intense and anticipated competition of the year – Wright having to win the event to then compete against Gilmore for the World Title crown. Unfortunately for Wright, she was unable to out-surf local Carissa Moore on the perfect right handers that peeled through the bay.
“This has been the most intense title race of my career. This season brought us to the best waves we’ve seen on tour and the level of women’s surfing is better than it’s ever been. I won my first world title here and am speechless that today I’ve won my sixth world title at Honolua Bay, a break I dreamed about surfing as a kid”, said Stephanie Gilmore.
SurfStitch would like to congratulate Stephanie Gilmore on her sixth World Title and a great year of surfing. A huge congratulations also goes out to Carissa Moore for taking out the final event of the 2014 World Tour.
Check out the amazing highlights from Gilmore’s 2014 surf campaign. It’s no surprise a sixth World Title has now been added to the collection!
