One To Watch: Ibeyi
Electro-tinged, French-Cuban sisters Ibeyi transform the musical landscape with their haunting and mesmerising self-titled debut album. Combining Yorùbán chants with a blend of hip-hop beat-craft and electronic composition, the 19 year old twins owe their rich musical talents to their late father, Grammy award winning, Buena Vista Social Club percussionist, Anga Díaz. Tapping into their musical heritage, afro-soul sisters Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé Díaz offer a darkly beautiful and beguiling melody in their song ‘River’ taken from their four-song EP.
Recently signed to the illustrious independent label XL, Ibeyi join a host of eminent artists like Prodigy, The White Stripes and The XX as they launch their European and international careers in 2015. The Paris-based, multi instrumentalists have already been shortlisted for the notorious ‘BBC Sound of 2015’ and hailed as contemporary spirituals by music authorities like Jules Holland, Gilles Peterson and Kevin Beadle. Inspired by a myriad of current and classic artists like Nina Simone, Meshell Ndegeocello, Miriam Makeb and Roy Ayers, Ibeyi embrace their spiritual Yorùbán tradition and modern electronic edge to create the 13 track album ‘Ibeyi’ available from February 16th 2015.
