Two Minutes With Jordy Smith
Jordan Michael Smith (or better known to the rest of us as Jordy Smith) is no doubt one of the best surfers to ever come out of the chilly South African waters.
Now living on the sunny shores of Southern California with his wife, the world number 22 continues to blow minds around the world with his raw power and ability to draw some of the best lines in surfing’s history. Perhaps the long, perfect walls of J Bay are to thank, or maybe they are just putting something in his water bottle.
Jordy, cheers for taking a few minutes to catch up. How’ve you been mate?
Yeah not bad thanks. I’ve had a bit of an injury that I’ve been trying to get better. I hurt my knee in West Oz and have been out of the water for the past 3 weeks. But super excited about Brazil and to be out surfing again.
In 2014 you made the move to California. Was there a reason for this? How are you enjoying it?
Yeah… I just couldn’t handle travelling so far every time I had to go somewhere. Travelling from South Africa is bad on my body, especially when you only have a day before the contest starts. It’s also really good and easy to work with my sponsors, being on call and in the same time zone.
How are your days different from being a South African resident to now a SoCal resident?
Haha well every time I surf now I can guarantee that there will be 50 guys out hahaha! But on a whole not that much different I just don’t get to hang out with friends all that much.
What’s the best thing about the Aussie leg of the World Tour?
There are so many great things,my favorite is prob the consistency of surf. It’s always 3 feet plus.
Have you been able to sneak away from the limelight and score some secret sessions?
Yeah for sure but I don’t think it’s a good thing if I had to name a few spot that I scored!
Do you have a favourite go-to board template?
Yeah, the Al Merrick G Rabbit. 6’2 and half, 19 1/4 x 2 1/2, rounded squash.
What influence do you have on the behind the scenes of your signature products?
Well I can tell you that it’s a board that is definitely made for Australian shores. It’s a real high performance board. It’s one that I ride with no doubt. I am really comfortable taking out in a heat brand new. It’s got a lot of rocker so fits in the pocket really well, and is extremely responsive.
What dietary habits are in the life of Jordy Smith to ensure you perform to your maximum potential?
Balance. That’s the best bit of advice I could give. I’m a bigger guy so I can’t just nail anything and everything, but I’m not afraid of a good burger!
What do you see as some of your biggest achievements in your professional career?
Well definitely winning the QS at Jbay back to back, 2nd place finish in the world and a few more. Still hunting down the Title is consistently in my mind though.
Favourite wave on Tour?
J Bay, but Fiji is a close second.
What are your hobbies outside of the water?
Shoes, I’m super into shoe design.
Do you have a certain playlist, band or type of music you play before a Heat?
Yeah, mostly rap I would say. It comes and goes with good songs, so nothing that races to mind.
Can you tell us about the injury that occurred in WA through the contest period of the Margaret River Pro forcing you to pull out?
I split my heel open and got five stitches, but at the same time it hyper extending my knee which is the worse things about this whole injury.
Wifey taking good care of you?
Hahaha yeah! She is playing a great nurse hahaha.
Red, blue or white jersey when competing?
Red for sure.. But I will take the win in any hahaha.
