With new boards and bikini’s packed tight, passport in hand and fellow Billabong ambassador Tanika Hoffman by her side, Ellie-Jean Coffey headed to Mexico to explore Tulum on the east and Sayulita on the west for the very first time.

Once firmly planted, they searched, surfed, wandered and laughed; enjoying all the historical sights, mysterious cenotes and stunning landscapes. The warm, welcoming mornings were well spent in the surf and were topped off each day with sunset drinks and burritos by the sea in the Latin paradise.

We caught up with Ellie-Jean to talk their Mexican journey…

Ellie, thanks for catching up! Tell us all about shooting with Billabong in Mexico!?
The trip was incredible, we travelled to Tulum and Sayulita. I was accompanied by the gorgeous Tanika Hoffman, a good friend from South Africa.

What have been the standout moments?
I absolutely loved Sayulita. It was my first authentic Mexican experience, the town was soulful and old, it had a certain innocence to it.

Tell us the best things about travelling with the Billabong crew?
I can’t tell you enough how amazing my experiences with travelling with the Billabong crew truly are. My entire 7 years of being with them I will cherish for the rest of my life. I have the fondest memories and life long relationships.

What are your favourite pieces of the new collection?
My favourite would have to be the Island Times One Piece. I think it was made with me in mind; pink and floral! I also love ALL of the surf capsule. I swear swimwear is my daily outfit.

Have you been scoring any waves?
I haven’t really, I’ve been in America for 6 weeks now so I have been working in other areas. I can’t tell you how ready I am to get some good waves.

Have you tried any local Mexican cuisine?
We ate at the most incredible places I had the best food I have ever eaten in my entire life. Burritos are my favourite food and chipotle sauce is literally my fairy god mother so I happily indulged in the many local Mexican restaurants.

Give us a run down of the daily schedule?
We woke up early and search for waves, surfed, wondered around the village for hours and ate some scrumptious food, surfed in the afternoon for hours, watched the sunset with each other and had a glass of wine.

What is one experience you’ll take away from the trip?
I will take away the beautiful town of Sayulita and the historical cenote’s of Tulum. But most importantly I will take away the laughs and connection with beautiful people and the moments I felt alive.
