Behind The Campaign: Roxy's Seychelles Sojourn
Roxy continues to bring the fresh with their latest Autumn collection an eclectic mix of rich textures, cultures and styles that speak to our love of free-spirited travel. For their latest shoot this youthful zest for life took Kelia Moniz, Monyca Eleogram and Bruna Schmitz to the turquoise waters of La Digue Island in the Seychelles.
We were lucky enough to delve deeper into the Indian Ocean inspiration for Roxy’s latest shoot with Todd Saunders, Roxy’s Global Creative Director.
Join us as we get the low-down from Todd on the adventures of their globe-trotting crew in the sunny Seychelles.
Thanks for catching up Todd! Can you tell us about your role at Roxy?
As ROXY’s Creative Director, I have the pleasure of working with some of the most compelling personalities both in the water and on the mountain, and telling their stories.
Your new campaign and collection have just dropped, tell us all about it!?
From Product Design to Marketing to our Athletes, we’ve had a blast putting the new campaign and collection together. The ROXY team are our muse, and we’ve partnered with these surf and snow bona fides to present their narratives as honestly as possible. In 2017, everything ROXY is fun, hip, but more than anything else, it’s dripping with style.
You are always shooting in the most beautiful locations. How did this differ from the ones you’ve shot in the past?
The ROXY girls are a well-traveled bunch to say the least. We polled the team, and pin-pointed the Seychelles as a completely new (and completely compelling) destination for us all – and it did not disappoint!
What’s one memory you’ll take away from this campaign and trip in general?
Building-scale granite boulders framing empty, turquoise line-ups. Fresh caught, Creole BBQ right on the beach. Late-night, slack-key guitar and percussion jam sessions. We were overwhelmed by the beauty of La Digue Island and the locals certainly captured our hearts.
Why did you choose this place over others? What’s the process?
Our locations have to deliver either great surf or great snow. The Seychelles was a risky call for us, as the window for swell can be relatively narrow, but the elements came together, and we scored some really fun waves.
How long did it take to shoot and bring together?
Our team is made up of World Champions and Olympic medalists, and their schedules are packed with training, PR appearances, free-riding and competition. Once we secure a shoot window that works for everyone, we typically have about 5 days on location together. The post production phase of a seasonal campaign generally takes about 3 months.
Who did you use as talent? Have you used them before?
This was a Three Amigos trip- Kelia Moniz, Monyca Eleogram and Bruna Schmitz. This infamous bunch are some of the most fun girls to shoot with because they really are best friends, and you just can’t fake that chemistry. It’s never a dull moment…
What will we catch you in from the new collection?
As the bomber jacket returns to fashion essential status, the travel inspired La Isla Cuba Muse Bomber is a must for any ROXY girl. The girls are also loving the Pop Surf Onesie, an on-trend one piece with metallic & print detailing.
