Meet Your Maker: Amelia Stanley of Tigerlily
Full of bright colours and bold prints and oozing summer nostalgia, you can spot one of the iconic Australian label’s bikinis from a mile away. Founded by style maven, Jodhi Meares, Tigerlily is named after the equally beautiful American Indian Princess from J.M Barrie’s childhood favourite, Peter Pan.
We caught up with Creative Director, Senior Designer and ringleader, Amelia Stanley to get the goss on what goes on behind the scenes at Tigerlily‘s Sydney studio. As one of 17 girls in the office, there is certainly a lot of gossiping to be had (mostly about food, of course)!
Walk us through your design team’s innovation process for the spring summer 2014 collection?
We research and travel a lot – we always travel somewhere new each year. We have our sources for finding the best fabrics and print inspiration for us to draw on once we begin designing. Its an organic process, so it’s never the same creative process. For SS14, we traveled to Ibiza and the south of France for inspiration.
What will we see you wearing from the new collection?
I love the new Buzios Pant with its soft, clean lines and our bikini bra shapes that are perfect for paddle boarding. There are lots of Gauzy whites in our December/January drops and these are my favourite to wear over my bikinis – my uniform for the summer holidays.
Where is Tigerlily HQ?
We are so lucky to have an incredible new creative space in Alexandria, Sydney. We feel very at home here.
Describe your workspace?
It’s an open office filled with fabrics from all over the world, samples, vintage archives and a few old trunks full of bikinis and textiles.
Walk us through a typical day at Tigerlily HQ…
I start with a Soy Chai and catch up with the design team on what they are working on and together we make a plan for the day or week. This is followed by fittings with our technical team, meetings on fabric development, retail sales, e-commerce and marketing/PR or catch ups with our Campaign Team.
Tell us a couple of funny/quirky things that take place behind the scenes at Tigerlily HQ?
With an office of 17 girls it’s not unlikely you may turn up in the same outfit as someone else – sometimes 3 or 4 versions of the same style or print. And, we talk about food a lot! I would say as much as we talk about bikinis. We take the planning of catering of Tigerlily events very seriously. It’s always something new, fresh and healthy (most of the time).
Describe the Tigerlily team in 3 words…
Colourful, dedicated and mad…
What’s been playing in your head phones lately?
The Cave Singers, Chet Faker and Ibiza Global Radio.
Ibiza and Mykonos.
France and India.
What’s the next big thing coming out of Tigerlily?
We turn 15 next year so you will have to wait and see!
