The Waves For Water foundation started in 2009 when professional surfer Jon Rose was on a boat off the coast of Sumatra. Feeling a small shake while out on the ocean, the boat soon returned to find the city of Padang destroyed by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake. This was when the first Waves For Water mission started, as Jon realised the 100,000 people who were left homeless would need clean water and basic essentials.

Nowadays, more than five years on, the foundation continues to grow. The organisation has implemented over 100,000 water filters through the world, allowing seven and half million people to have clean water and live healthier lives. One basic $50 filter can supply over one hundred people with clean water, so it is evident how far they have come.

The Waves For Water foundation’s mission is simple: Get clean water to every single person who needs it. And that’s exactly what they are doing.

In 2014 Winter Vincent, a young super grom from Manly, joined the cause. Raising donations for communities in need of clean water in the Mentawai Islands, the teams at Waves For Water and Hurley were quick to see Winter’s commitment and love for the important cause. They flew the youngster out to the Mentawai’s to see where his donations would be going, allowing for him to see first hand how effective the water filters can be to communities in need.

This year, Winter is continuing to be an ambassador for the cause, launching his very own Surf To School Day, held today (Friday 13th) at Manly Village Public School. The goal is to inspire kids all over Australia to have a fun day at school by raising donations through gold coins. The donations will then be used as Winter’s were, helping communities all over the globe who need clean water and do not have the simple necessities we sometimes take for granted. And hey, you can even win a custom Stacey surfboard!

So jump aboard and support Winter and the Waves For Water foundation. It always feels good to give back to communities in need! To donate, visit Waves For Water, or go visit the Hurley crew at any time throughout the Hurley Australian Open of Surfing.

Check out Winter’s trip to the Mentawai’s last year. The little grom rips and clearly has a great heart!
