Meet your maker, Brooke McGregor of the Byron Bay based brand making waves across the globe with their ‘Palm Trees and Street Machines’ philosophy. Combining the east coasts beautiful beaches with rowdy bikes might sound like a bit of an oxymoron, but it’s what sets them apart for the rest.

Co Founder, Creative Director and Disc Jockey at THRILLS CO, we caught up with Brooke to get the scoop on what’s goes on behind the scenes at HQ, his closet love affair with soft rock, and what’s next to come out of the all Aussie brand (Denim!).

Thrills opening 4.1

How did THRILLS come to fruition?
It all started when my business partner, Ryan and I decided to import some vintage motorcycles from the USA – no one was doing the bike thing in Byron Bay and we thought it was a cool idea. While we were waiting for the first shipment of motorcycles, Tabitha (THRILLS Designer) and I put the first t-shirt collection together for a handful of boutiques around Australia, including SurfStitch. As they say, the rest is history…

Where’s are you guys based?
The brand is based in Byron Bay. We have our head office and motorcycle workshop in the Arts and Industrial estate and our flagship retail store, Far East located in town.

Describe your workspace…
Cramped, busy, loud and fast.

Walk us through a typical day at THRILLS
Nothing is typical at THRILLS.  Its’ always changing and moving so fast. It’s a highly creative environment. Depending on what’s going on, multiple deadlines, photoshoots and retail will dictate the day. It’s never dull that’s for sure.

Tell us a couple of strange/quirky things that takes place behind the scenes at THRILLS HQ?
One of the quirkier things about our brand is our multicultural lunch discussions (we are all very busy, but make sure we all stop and eat lunch together), We have a Japanese mechanic, American co-founder, Thai retail manager and me – plan ol’ Australian born.

Describe the Thrills crew in 3 words…
Family, multicultural and busy.

If you could have any icon wear Thrills, who would it be?
It would have to be Blondie. She is by far the most punk rock and revolutionary artist of our time. Not to mention, a straight up fashion icon. She embodies all that we dig.

Walk us through the design process for THRILLS’ AW 15 collection?
Tabitha and I have always had a strong vision for THRILLS. The collection’s design process has continued along the same track as it has since inception. We value consistency and while moving through fashion trends, we endeavor to perfect our styles and fits to constantly better our classics. Our brand has a unique brand positioning due to our Byron Bay location and our affiliation with motorcycles- this will always be our DNA.

What will we see you wearing from the new season collection?
I’m a huge fan of the trench coat that has just landed. It’s the perfect melding of a preppy classic with a punk rock attitude.

Give us the brief history of Brooke McGregor?
Born, got this far and trying to get to the next bit…

The fashion industry is a bit of a hard one to crack, how did you get your foot in the door?
It’s always been in my blood. My father was in the rag trade his entire life, so it was always going to happen for me to some degree.

Describe your morning routine…
It’s an early wild start with two rowdy kids running around the house pretending to be dinosaurs or speaking a strange language that they have created. I’ll try and surf quickly out the front of my house, drop the midgets at school and then head into the office with Tabitha to start discussing the daily plan.

What is your ideal Sunday?
Beach all day with drinks on the front stoop aka ‘stairs of truth’ in the afternoon with our neighbors listing to soft rock vinyl records.

What do you get up to outside of THRILLS?
I’m a full blown grommet surf rat. Any chance I get I’m out there. Other than surfing, I’m a music lover.

What’s playing in your headphones right now?
I don’t do headphones, but music-wise I’m a soft rock easy listing closet fan. This includes Hall and Oats, Creedence Clear Water and Cream.

The last place you travelled?

Next stop?

Favourite watering hole?
Front stoop at home for sure – the cocktails are as cool as the sea breeze and it’s always happy hour.

What’s the next big thing to come out of THRILLS?
Denim. It’s the real deal and about to drop in the coming months so keep your eyes peeled…
