Everyone loves to travel these days, and with bucket lists only growing by the day, it’s sometimes hard to prioritise destinations and decide where you want to head next. So, who better to help influence your decisions than someone who travels the world full time?

We picked Steph Gilmore’s brain to discover the six time world champ’s 5 dream travel destinations and why they are each so special.

World Map Dark1. Southwest France
Think, wine, cheese, châteaux, vineyards and sunflower fields: the southwest is the essence of rural France, and much more. The historical richness of the southwest begins tens of thousands of years ago, when our Paleolithic ancestors made paintings on the walls of a cave in Lascaux in the Dordogne region and at other caves in the Lézère valley. This is a region where the pace of life is slow, like the water in the rivers that flow through it. With beautiful scenery to admire and surround you while you score pumping waves, this is one place to add to the to-do list.

2. Cuba
Famously known for its vintage cars, sensual salsa dancing, highly sort after cigars and its exquisite buildings and with over 3 million tourists visiting each year, this popular little island will be sure to keep you on your toes (literally!). This colourful country is located in the Northern Caribbean where the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean meet. Grab your maracas and be ready to get lost in Cuba’s unique lifestyle.

3. New York
Cue bagels, $1 pizza slices, Starbucks double venti caramel lattes and dirty martinis – and you have arrived in the capital city of the world, the infamous New York City. Also known as the ‘Big Apple’ or ‘The city that never sleeps’ NYC should be top 5 on anyone’s travel bucket list.

You can ride the subway from one end of Manhattan to the other within 35 minutes, jump on the Ferry to visit the Statue of Liberty and Staten Island, or for the more adventurous type, hire a bike and ride over the Brooklyn Bridge. From Top of the Rock to a picnic in Central Park, make sure you plan ahead as you don’t want to miss a thing! Oh, and don’t forget to wear some comfy shoes because you’ll be doing a lot of walking!

4. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Known as the second largest city in Brazil and soon to be home to the 2016 Olympic Games, this sun kissed destination will leave you wanting more. Whether its captivating culture steals your heart, or popular festivals keep you dancing all through the night, Rio de Janeiro is one not to be missed. Be sure to take time to check out the spectacular views at the Christ the Redeemer statue or enjoy a picturesque bike ride around the Rodrigo de Freitas Lake.

5. West Sumatra
Nothing beats the feeling of rounding up a group of your best friends and taking a trip to West Sumatra. Known for its tropical rainforests, crystal clear waters, pumping waves and ever so friendly local people, the region see’s people travel from all over the world to get a taste of the peaceful island lifestyle. If there specifically to hunt some of the best waves the world has to offer, be sure to make time for an all inclusive boat trip, with new experiences, sights, barrels and more around every island corner, this place is truly paradise.
