BEHIND THE BRAND: The Wolf Gang

Established only a year ago it’s easy to see why The Wolf Gang is already stealing hearts, with their focus on accessories that deliver a tangible ode to the exotic and bring life to any wardrobe.
We were curious to find out the inspiration behind the global flavours and luxe feel of these dreamy creations, and were lucky enough to speak with Vanessa Pearce, Adelaide native and Creative Director of The Wolf Gang. Read on to get Vanessa’s exclusive insight into life at the office, her favourite pieces from the latest collection, and the globe trotting inspo behind their signature look.

Thanks for catching up, for those who don’t know can you tell us about yourself and your role at The Wolf Gang?
My name is Vanessa, and I’m the founder and Creative Director of The Wolf Gang. I’m also a wife, a mumma and a dreamer! I work across every facet of The Wolf Gang from design and sales to marketing and PR.
What has your journey been like to get to where you are today? Was there anything specifically that drew you to this industry?
Beginning my journey in fashion retail, I was lucky enough to be ever surrounded by beautiful pieces and observe how styles evolve. I was inspired by the industry, as many are but I had little idea on how I could create a label of my own. My studies in marketing and communication provided a strong foundation and enabled me to better understand the business side of the fashion industry, and when it came time to realise my dream of starting my own label I backed myself to make it happen.
What does The Wolf Gang do best and why?
In everything we do, we try to create a feeling of escapism. Our collections are inspired by faraway lands, different cultures, exploring the unknown. Our goal is to create a sense of wanderlust in each product, so when wearing a piece from our collection you immediately feel you’ve been taken somewhere exotic without necessarily leaving home.
Can you tell us about the origins of the brand and how The Wolf Gang has grown over the years?
We’re a family owned and operated business that began only 12 months ago. After a soft launch mid 2016, we’ve seen great organic growth simply allowing the collections to shine. I credit our early success to the fact that we’re making items we ourselves want to own, rather than attempting to forecast fashion trends.
Where is The Wolf Gang office based and what is a standard day on the tools like for you?
We’re based in Adelaide. We share a converted warehouse space with a creative agency which is conveniently right next door to one of Adelaide’s best cafes. A regular day is split between emails, content management and wholesale accounts on the business side and then the continued research, development and sampling of new products and collections.
There are hints of global flavour running through The Wolf Gang designs, tell us what drew you to this look and texture?
In our travels across the globe, we’ve been privileged to experience different cultures, their ways of life and how the visual arts can operate as a universal language. In our designs, we want to re-create the feeling of experiencing the unfamiliar and evoking the thrill that goes along with it.
Who are The Wolf Gang pieces designed for?
Our collections are designed for those who dream of escaping the everyday. The eternal wanderers, curious and ready for the next adventure. For those who admire luxurious textures in their raw and purest forms, celebrating imperfection and authenticity. For those whom life is an expression of colours.
What is the process like to dream up a new purse/bag/clutch and take it from concept through to final product?
We begin with a memory of a time, a place, a colour or a landscape… We then explore the ways in which these ethereal concepts can come to life as a tangible design. Our design team experiments with shapes, compositions and complimentary elements to go out for sampling. We then test the practicality and wear of the materials and further adjust before final production.
What will we catch you accessorizing with from The Wolf Gang collections and why?
I’m currently obsessed with our peachy Terracotta colour-way. I carry the Berber tote in Terracotta everywhere I go and I also have the Inca tassel + coin purse in Terracotta attached to my keys (mainly so I don’t misplace them, but also because it’s so convenient). When I’m heading out I can’t go past the Bedouin in Midnight – it goes with absolutely everything in my wardrobe. I often like to change it up and swap the clutch tassel to the Inca tassel, etc. Then I accessorise with lots of vintage denim, embroidered and embellished blouses, ruffles and of course, colour!
