Long, hot, late summer days spent barefoot and carefree between the limestone cliffs and azure depths of the Mediterranean are the kind of dreams that lull us into sweet nostalgia. It’s safe to say that the allure of the Spanish coast has ensnared many of us into its captivating embrace and this year was no different. We happened to find ourselves happily lost along the shores of Cala Ferrera living out the ethos of the travel lusting lifestyle as we shot an exclusive Rue Stiic x SurfStitch capsule collection.

With the exclusive range just landed on site, and a veritable album of drool-worthy snaps filtering down into our lucky hands, we had our curiosity piqued and reached out to Rue Stiic’s head designer, Jillian Beed. With the label’s track record of delivering dreamy wanderlust-inspired pieces that reference global roots from Australia, to California, Bali and beyond, we were keen to hear her take on the Mallorca expedition.

Tune in as we chat with Jillian about her favourite pieces for the summer, discover the Spanish honey who brought the exclusive range to life, and hear how the team spent their days flitting between each dreamy location.

Jillian, thanks for catching up! What an exciting time with the launch of the exclusive collection between Rue Stiic and SurfStitch! Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the collection itself that’s landed just in time for summer?
The inspiration behind our exclusive capsule with SurfStitch was taken one step further from our St. Palma collection which was inspired by the Australian coast flaunting a colour palette of nautical hues paired with rich earth tones. We have introduced our hand drawn blossom print exclusively for SurfStitch in this season’s rich red rust, as well as introduced updated favourite shapes in our nautical stripe. There’s a bit of a Spanish flare that can be seen behind the collection design – noting the off shoulders, light ruffles, and a red rust colour that makes life fun.

Tell us why you chose Mallorca as the location?
Mallorca was a destination we thought would embrace this capsule beautifully. With the organic coastline, turquoise water, and fun Spanish coastal vibe – the special island perfectly pairs with this flirty summer collection.

Simply put, the whole collection looks incredible! Can you talk us through your favourite pieces?
Thank you! Yes it’s probably one of my most favorite Summer collections we’ve created so far! I am so in love with the La Concha Top – it’s so feminine and flattering and can easily be worn from day to night. The La Palma Dress is my definite go – to. Again, great for day to night, so easy to wear, and the ruffles make it a bit fun. Out of our exclusive Swim pieces, the San Lorenzo Surf Suit is such a dream. It’s great for those full days out in the sun while participating in any water activity – I have one in every color. Can’t live without it!

Who is the chosen talent for the shoot and how does her unique look represent Rue Stiic as a brand?
Our muse for this collection is the beautiful Marina Alonso. Marina was hands down the favorited talent for this shoot for so many reasons – she is the ultimate Rue Stiic girl. This Spanish honey lives a beautiful coastal lifestyle, embraces her messy surf hair, and flaunts a unique feminine style with a little mix of vintage, modern, and coastal influence.

Amy, our Senior Buyer, also was lucky enough to attend the campaign shoot. What was the best part about having her there to represent our team? Getting to mix work and play is always fun, especially in that setting!
All I can say is that we had the most amazing team for this shoot. Creative ideas were flowing, laughter was imminent, the sun was shining and I think in that setting – magic is made and that can definitely be seen through the shoot. Amy and I work super well together – we love creating a fun vibe by mixing fashion/surf/coastal lifestyle. It was such a great team effort and a shoot that will never be forgotten.

Can you give us a rundown of how each day of shooting unfolded? Describe the daily routines?
Sure thing! Each morning we would cook up a big group breaky, grab a coffee, and walk around the area to search for some special areas to shoot. During shoot time – we would plan the story in each location and bring the allocated looks that were especially for that story. We had about 4-5 different locations so we had a lot of planning for each location. After shooting for the day, we had a big group dinner. The first night, we did a big cookup from the house and the last night we all went out for a celebratory dinner.

Now that this collection has launched, what’s next!?
Well first – let’s celebrate this upcoming summer with this collection! Everyone get around it! And for us here in Rue Stiic HQ – we’re on to planning Spring/Summer 2018 – destination to be announced…  Stay tuned!
