Behind The Collection: Sojourn By Peony
‘Sojourn’ is the dreamy collection that’s just dropped from the talented crew at Peony, and it’s safe to say we’re a little enchanted. Delivering a nostalgic European artisanal vibe, complete with a coastal citrus palette and subtly feminine prints, these are the kinds of styles that transcend seasons to remain wardrobe staples for years to come.
We’ve also discovered that peonies are some of the first flowers to bloom in early summer, which we think couldn’t be more fitting as a namesake for the brand that delivers us nostalgic swimwear every year to welcome the warmer months. With these delightful discoveries in mind, we managed to track down Sophie Thomas, the Designer at Peony.
Read through as we chat with Sophie about the French inspo behind the ‘Sojourn’ collection, her personal faves that she’ll be living in this summer, and an exclusive first look at previously unseen campaign imagery, including ‘behind the scenes’ Polaroid shots!

Have you always had an interest in design? Tell us a little about your career/life path that has led you to your current role.
I studied a Bachelor of Fashion Design at uni and came on board full-time with Peony last year. I’d known Becky, our Director, for almost a decade before working for Peony. Becky is now married to my cousin Nick, so we are family.
Where is the Peony office based and what is your favourite part about working there on a day to day basis?
Our beautiful office space is located at the mouth of Tallebudgera Valley in Burleigh Heads. Becky found the space about 8 months ago, it was an old yoga studio which was renovated into our office space. It’s open plan, light and airy with original timber floors and windows. We coined it Peony House because it feels more like a home than an office.
How would you describe the vibe of the latest collection ‘Resort ’17 – Sojourn’ in a few sentences or less?
Sojourn means “a temporary stay” in French and was inspired by imagery of Jane Birkin and holidayers alike from the ‘60s and ‘70s in the South of France.
Can you tell us about the signature pieces we are seeing in terms of colour palette, shapes, ruffles/ruching, prints etc?
The collection is built upon a warm, citrusy colour palette and features the return of signature styles such as our Gathered One Piece in our custom Marigold broderie anglaise fabric and our Crepe Sun Pant and Crepe String Tri.
What was the design process like to take ‘Resort ’17 – Sojourn’ from concept to creation this year? Did you have any low points/high points/setbacks/victories?
We are the biggest perfectionists I know here at Peony, so if we aren’t obsessed with the final sample, then we cull it and move forward with something else. The sampling process is always a problem solving exercise but ultimately very satisfying when all the hard work results in a premium product we love. I look forward to the high points like handing over a collection and celebrating with the team.
Who do you imagine wearing your designs and where?
There are so many considerations to make but often I circle back to myself and the girls in the office. We are all very different, in terms of our body shapes, preferences, styles and sensibilities – but we all believe wholeheartedly in the brand, what it represents and the intrinsic attitude of Peony, so ultimately it’s important that the collection speaks to all of us.
Lastly, thanks for the exclusive polaroids of this collection!
You’re welcome! They were taken “behind the scenes” on campaign shoot day by our beautiful photographer, Tess Leopold.
